Synopsis
Rockmans is one of the best known ladies’ fashion chain in Australia
with more than 300 stores in both the major urban centres as well as the small
country town. Prior to their acquisition by Pretty Girl in 2001, Rockmans were
a fully owned Woolworths subsidiary and as such had to adhere to some very stringent
corporate performance and reporting criteria.
Century Software commenced their relationship in 1994 implementing software
to manage a range of customers and an even broader range of merchandise including
casual, day / evening as well as swimwear and accessories. Customer service
including extended credit facilities are a main focus of the Rockmans image
How they do it.
The Rockmans merchandise systems can be divided into four distinct layers.
At store level are POS systems. Data captured at that level feeds into Century’s
merchandising system, then in turn through the Cash Book and General Ledger.
Stock purchases are made through merchandising system, in turn updating both
the Open to Buy and the Commitments. Receivals in turn feeds the invoice data
into the Creditor module.
With direct store delivery, transaction levels are high. Century financials
will process between 22,000 and 30,000 creditor invoices per month. Sales and
other transactions are also fed into Century, with all of them culminating in
the General Ledger.
Merchandise and Financial reporting at Rockmans is complex. Profit & Loss
reports are produced for each store. However, consolidated reports by state
and by management area are also required. Since these areas often cut across
state boundaries analysis is made all the more complex.
Business Benefits
With more than 300 stores to account for, fixed asset management is not a
trivial matter, neither are the issues of outfitting new stores, modernising
older ones and accounting for the myriad of small items such as light bulbs
which stores consume in large quantities.
Apart from the more traditional areas Inventory Management and Cash Management,
Fixed Assets, Project Costing and Budgetary Control are the tools which allow
Rockmans to manage all of these in a lean and mean yet efficient and timely
fashion.
